Contemplation and Reflection on the Universe: The Pathway to Deepening Faith

Sharia texts from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah's scholars agree that the human mind is not merely a tool for managing worldly affairs, but rather the basis of moral responsibility and the key to attaining supreme truths, foremost among them being steadfast faith in Almighty God. Islam has made the exercise of thought and observation regarding cosmic and Quranic signs a sublime heart-felt worship that elevates the believer from the rank of blind following to the pinnacle of certainty. The verses of the Wise Mention repeatedly urge the decoding of existence, demonstrating that this vast universe, with its precision and perfection, is God's manifest book that corroborates His written book. Perhaps the most eloquent embodiment of this faithful truth is found at the beginning of the end of Surah Al-Imran, in the Almighty's words: (Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding * Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire). In this majestic Quranic scene, the Almighty links the purity of the mind—which He named "Al-Lubb" (the core)—with the perpetuity of remembrance and the depth of reflection. The observer of the succession of darkness and light and the marvel of the heavens and the earth thus reaches an inevitable conclusion that refutes absurdity and coincidence in this existence, leading them directly to exalt the Creator and turn to Him in awe and hope. This was affirmed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, through his verbal and practical Sunnah when these blessed verses were revealed to him. As narrated in the Sahih from the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, may God be pleased with her, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up to pray one night and wept until his beard and the earth became wet. When Bilal, may God be pleased with him, asked him about the reason for his weeping while God had forgiven his past and future sins, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: «Woe to the one who reads it and does not reflect upon it.» In this eloquent prophetic warning lies definitive proof that the purpose of reciting verses and observing creations is not merely a passing glance of the tongue or the eye, but rather plunging with insight to extract the proofs of divine oneness and greatness. Woe and loss to the one who is deprived of the delight of mental observation, failing to yield fear or faith in his heart. Indeed, the Quran directs human focus toward observing the closest things to oneself, as in the Almighty's saying: (And on the earth are signs for the certain * And in yourselves. Then will you not see?), and rouses his resolve to ponder the wondrous creation of God around him, as in His saying: (Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created? And at the sky - how it is raised?), alongside His explicit call to reflect upon His recited verses in His saying: (Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts?). This clearly indicates that abandoning reflection and contemplation is tantamount to closing the portals of perception and locking hearts against the light of guidance. The scholars of the Ummah and the imams of the righteous predecessors unanimously agreed on the obligation of observation and reasoning to know the Maker, the Almighty, and considered reflection to be among the greatest acts of the heart and the most noble forms of worship. It is the root from which all other acts of obedience stem; for God is not worshipped with anything like reflection upon His signs, which begets love, reverence, and magnification. Therefore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would prolong his silence and maintain deep thought, directing his companions and nation to contemplate God's bounties and creatures without delving into His essence, as minds are incapable of comprehending Him, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: (Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision). The legislative framework of this intellectual obligation does not stop at generalities; rather, linguists and exegetes detail the complementary relationship between the two wings of knowledge. "Contemplation" (Tafakkur) directs insight into creatures and horizons to discern their origins and the wisdom behind their creation, while "Reflection" (Tadabbur) turns toward observing the ultimate consequences of matters, understanding the objectives of Quranic verses, and their outcomes. Together, they outline the methodology followed by the father of the prophets, Abraham, peace be upon him, in arguing with his people and ascending the ranks of certainty. He extrapolated the phenomena of the universe—stars, the moon, and the sun—to prove with definitive rational evidence that what changes and sets is unworthy of divinity, declaring his disavowal of polytheism and turning sincerely toward the One who originated the heavens and the earth. This is the very path that led the companions and followers to place this worship at the pinnacle of deeds, to the extent that practical consensus was transmitted from them preferring it over mere supererogatory physical acts devoid of heart presence. As reflected in the sayings of Abu al-Darda, al-Hasan al-Basri, and Sufyan al-Thawri, may God have mercy on them, that reflecting for an hour on God's bounties and the consequences of the Hereafter is better than spending a night in prayer while the heart is heedless and distracted. They described thought as the clear mirror that shows the believer their good and bad deeds, and the key that begets wisdom and revives dead hearts. When the mind is engaged in reflecting upon the revelation and contemplating creation, it breaks free from the shackles of heedlessness and grasps the divine laws operating within selves and horizons. Thus, reflection on revealed signs meets contemplation of cosmic signs to form two wings with which the believer soars into the horizons of true knowledge, transitioning from witnessing the effect to beholding the Effector, and from observing craftsmanship to magnifying the Craftsman. Consequently, mental knowledge transforms into bodily reverence, upright conduct, and the cultivation of the earth upon guidance and insight, so that faith settles in the deepest recesses of the heart as a certainty unshaken by doubts, and a light guiding its holder to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy, thereby achieving the perfection of servitude to God, the Lord of the worlds.
