The outcomes of the UN Security Council session in October constitute a decisive historic turning point in the trajectory oflation of the Moroccan Sahara issue, as its deliberations concluded without extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, known as «MINURSO». This qualitative development was followed by the issuance of a Royal Cabinet statement placing this UN update in its correct political and strategic framework, emphasizing that ending the mission's mandate represents a pivotal and direct step towards the final closure of this fabricated regional conflict, which has spanned nearly thirty-five years since the mission's establishment in 1991.

The utmost importance of the Royal Cabinet statement stems from the fact that it translates the visionary Royal vision of His Majesty King Mohammed Sixth, which has established a firm diplomatic doctrine based on the premise that «the Sahara file is the lens through which Morocco views the world, and the clear and simple standard by which it measures the sincerity of friendships and the efficacy of partnerships». This has shifted Moroccan action in recent years from the logic of intermittent file management within UN corridors to the logic of strategic resolution and the consolidation of full national sovereignty. The statement clarified with its decisive contents that the non-renewal of MINURSO's mandate is not merely a passing technical procedure on the Security Council's agenda, but an explicit declaration of the expiration of traditional UN mechanisms originally based on the outdated referendum option, and a practical international recognition that the continuation of a mission bearing this name is no longer aligned with the existing political and field reality in the Kingdom's southern provinces.

This historic turning point relies on the accumulated diplomatic record led by Morocco with steadfastness and rigor, which has yielded a qualitative shift in the positions of major powers and permanent members of the Security Council, foremost among them the United States and France, which have resolved their choice by explicitly recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara and supporting the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom in 2007 as the sole framework for a solution. This is in addition to the historic position of Spain as the former administrative power of the region, and the growing European, Arab, and African support materialized on the ground by the opening of dozens of consulates-general in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla. This international diplomatic weight has contributed to changing the balance of power within UN corridors, pushing towards ending the contradiction between successive sovereign recognitions on one hand, and the continuation of a UN mission subject to Cold War equations on the other.

Among the fundamental angles explaining the inevitability of this UN shift are the radical field changes witnessed since the resolute intervention of the Royal Armed Forces to secure the Guerguerat border crossing in November 2020, and the unilateral announcement by the «Polisario» front disavowing the ceasefire agreement signed in 1991. This behavior effectively undermined the operational justification for the presence of the «MINURSO» mission by the opponents of territorial integrity themselves, at a time when the Kingdom of Morocco demonstrated its full sovereign capability to secure its borders, protect regional stability, and ensure the smooth flow of international trade toward the African hinterland, without the need for monitoring mechanisms surpassed by time and field reality.

On the domestic front, the stance expressed in the Royal Cabinet statement derives its strength from the established democratic and developmental reality in the Kingdom's southern provinces, which have produced—through periodic and fair electoral processes—local elites and legitimate representatives who manage their own affairs and record the highest rates of political participation at the national level. This path has been reinforced by the launch of the new development model for the southern provinces through a high Royal initiative, transforming the metropolises of the Moroccan Sahara into major economic and investment hubs, and making the population's engagement in the national building process under the roof of Moroccan sovereignty the truest democratic expression that supersedes all outdated theses.

Through its comprehensive reading of this transformation, the Royal Cabinet statement affirms that turning the page on «MINURSO» definitively cuts the path off against the attempts of the opponents of territorial integrity aimed at exploiting the annual dates of the Security Council to perpetuate the state of political stagnation and hinder regional integration. With the end of the mission's mandate, the file transitions from the stage of field UN monitoring to the stage of final consolidation of the political solution based exclusively on Moroccan sovereignty and the autonomy initiative, in light of the Kingdom's steadfast commitment to pursuing major developmental projects and geo-strategic Atlantic and African initiatives that have made the Moroccan Sahara a hub for regional and international stability and prosperity.
