Al-Ayyat train accident halts rail traffic and triggers emergency response

Train traffic on the Cairo–Aswan line was suspended in both directions on Sunday, November 8, following an accident in the Al-Ayyat area, south of Giza Governorate. The incident resulted in carriages derailing and passengers sustaining injuries, amid conflicting reports regarding the casualty count in Egyptian media. The newspaper "Al-Shorouk" cited a source from the Railway Authority stating that the accident involved trains 134 and 2010 near the Al-Riqqa station.

Ambulance and civil defense teams were dispatched to the vicinity of Gerza village to transport the injured and address the damaged carriages. The "Telegraph Egypt" website reported a toll of 120 injured, while other outlets published different figures, as no official statement was immediately available to confirm the final count at the time of reporting.

Regarding human casualties, "Veto" cited a responsible railway source stating that no fatalities had been recorded at the time of the statement, noting that the injuries were described as minor. The Authority deployed cranes and emergency teams to the site to clear the wreckage and prepare the line for the resumption of operations.

In parallel with the field response, it was decided to form a technical committee to inspect the accident site and determine the circumstances, as reported by "Akhbar Al-Youm" citing a responsible source at the Authority. The causes of the incident and the associated responsibilities remain subject to the results of inspections and investigations.
