Maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz has returned to the forefront after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced, according to reports published on Sunday, November 8, 2026, that fires broke out on two oil tankers following collisions with naval mines, in an incident whose details have not yet been independently verified.

According to the Iranian statement, one of the incidents occurred east of the strait and the other inside it. The Revolutionary Guard accused the two tankers of disabling their navigation and positioning systems and attempting to transit through routes it described as unauthorized, without disclosing their names, nationalities, or providing information on the fate of the crews or the extent of the damage.

The announcement coincided with reports of explosions heard on Saturday evening in areas of southern Iran, including Qeshm Island. Reuters reported that the link between those explosions and the tanker incidents remains unclear, while Iranian officials have not confirmed any missile strikes on the mentioned areas.

The incident follows a previous statement published on November 3, in which the Revolutionary Guard spoke of three tankers catching fire and warned ships cooperating with the U.S. military against using routes rejected by Tehran, threatening similar incidents. That announcement remains separate from today's reports regarding the two tankers, amid a lack of sufficient independent information to determine the circumstances of the latest event.
