Rabat - Mohammed Saad
The Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI, chaired on November 4, 2026, at the Royal Palace in Rabat, a working session dedicated to following up on the post-MINURSO phase following the conclusion of the United Nations mission's mandate in the Moroccan Sahara, in the wake of developments witnessed by the UN Security Council during its meeting held on October 30, according to a statement from the Royal Cabinet
During the session, King Mohammed VI underscored the priorities relating to the full respect of the Kingdom's territorial integrity, national unity, national security, and the peace of its citizens, particularly the inhabitants of the Southern Provinces, stressing the need to pursue the development project for the Southern Provinces and its structuring projects, as well as to strengthen national consensus around the territorial unity issue
The session was attended by Head of Government Fatima Zahra Mansouri, Royal Advisor Fouad Ali El Himma, Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, and General Mohamed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone
As part of preparations for the upcoming phase, King Mohammed VI gave his high instructions for the Ministry of the Interior's Coordination Office with MINURSO to take charge of coordinating and overseeing the liquidation and withdrawal process of the UN mission, ensuring that all procedures related to this operation are conducted in a smooth, orderly manner, and in a spirit of responsibility and cooperation with the United Nations
The Sovereign stressed the Kingdom's commitment to the ceasefire, affirming that this commitment is voluntary, steadfast, and will not change with the expiration of the UN mission's mandate, while continuing to monitor various developments related to the national cause at all levels, in accordance with the Kingdom's official stance
These developments come in the wake of the vote within the Security Council on October 30, 2026, during which the US draft resolution on the Moroccan Sahara garnered the support of 11 members, with 3 abstentions and Russia voting against it, before failing to be adopted due to Moscow's veto
The vote reflected broad support within the Council for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative under the Kingdom's sovereignty as the basis for reaching a political solution, in a development that reinforces the standing of the Moroccan initiative in international discussions regarding the regional dispute
The Royal Cabinet statement emphasized that the Kingdom of Morocco remains steadfast in fulfilling its international commitments and diplomatic doctrine based on preserving and contributing to peace while safeguarding its national sovereignty, pointing to the diplomatic momentum surrounding the national cause and the growing recognition from friendly and brotherly nations of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara
Morocco also reaffirmed its adherence to the Autonomy Initiative as the sole political solution that provides the elements for a definitive closure of this manufactured regional dispute, within the framework of respecting the Kingdom's sovereignty and territorial integrity
