Mauritania has renewed its commitment to a policy of positive neutrality in dealing with regional conflicts, foremost among them the Sahara issue, emphasizing its eagerness to contribute to finding peaceful solutions that preserve the region's stability and spare it further political and security tensions.
This stance was voiced by Mohamed Ould Oumar, Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations with Parliament, and official spokesperson for the Mauritinian government, during the press conference following the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. He affirmed that his country is closely monitoring developments in its regional environment and remains committed to a diplomatic approach based on non-alignment and facilitating solutions.
These statements acquire special significance in light of the ongoing dispute between Morocco and Algeria regarding the Sahara issue, and the accompanying diplomatic shifts within the United Nations. Nouakchott is keen to maintain its relations with both countries, driven by considerations of neighborhood, as well as shared economic and security interests.
For Mauritania, positive neutrality is not merely a declared political stance, but a fundamental pillar of its foreign policy, through which it seeks to avoid involvement in regional polarizations while keeping communication channels open with all concerned parties.
In this framework, Nouakchott reiterates its support for achieving a peaceful and consensual political settlement under the auspices of the United Nations, without aligning with any of the competing visions regarding the final solution to the Sahara issue.
The importance of the Mauritanian stance is highlighted by the country's strategic geographical location, its growing economic and commercial relations with Morocco, its political and diplomatic ties with Algeria, and the security challenges posed by the unstable situation in the Sahel region.
The continuation of this balance is expected to provide Mauritania with diplomatic space to contribute to bridging viewpoints. However, the success of any potential role remains tied to the willingness of the concerned parties to engage in serious negotiations and offer consensual solutions.
