A joint security operation carried out by police elements in the regional security district of Guercif, in coordination with the services of the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), has resulted in the arrest of two young men aged 21 and 22, suspected of involvement in scams and fraud targeting the bank accounts of a number of citizens, using methods based on impersonating public officials and executives of private institutions.
The two arrests were carried out on the evening of Monday, November 2, and the morning of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a rural area on the outskirts of Guercif, following security investigations and inquiries that enabled the identification of the suspects and the tracking of their movements, as part of efforts aimed at cracking down on financial fraud networks that exploit modern means of communication to trap victims.
According to preliminary investigation data, the suspects, along with other individuals, relied on making phone calls to citizens, presenting themselves with false professional and administrative titles, and deceiving victims into believing they could benefit from administrative services or obtain social benefits, before demanding that they disclose their banking data under pretexts that appeared to be related to official procedures.
Available information indicates that the data obtained by the suspects was likely used later to carry out fraudulent financial operations, with the aim of seizing funds from the victims' bank accounts without their consent, taking advantage of some citizens' trust in the entities they claimed to represent.
Field coordination between the security services in Guercif, the National Brigade of Judicial Police, and the Judicial Police brigade in the city of Témara contributed to advancing the investigation process and reaching data that helped identify and arrest the suspects.
The individuals concerned have been subjected to judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecutor's Office, with the aim of uncovering all circumstances and details of the case, determining the potential extensions of this activity, and verifying the identities of other individuals who may have ties to the acts under investigation.
This case brings back to the forefront the risks associated with telephone fraud and the theft of banking data, especially when suspects resort to exploiting the names of public institutions or claiming to provide social assistance in order to obtain confidential financial information.
It also highlights the importance of raising citizens' awareness of the need to verify the identity of callers, and not to disclose secret numbers, verification codes, or sensitive banking data over the phone, regardless of the status claimed by the other party.
