The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has launched the first license plates dedicated to autonomous vehicles on its road network, in a pioneering strategic step aimed at regulating the operation of these vehicles and clearly distinguishing them visually to road users and regulatory authorities, whether those operating within actual commercial services or those undergoing testing and pilot programs, as reported by the UAE newspaper Al Khaleej.
This regulatory initiative comes through the Integrated Transport Centre ("Abu Dhabi Mobility") of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, under the direct supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council ("Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems"), to keep pace with the rapid field expansion witnessed by the emirate in adopting and operating autonomous vehicles, contributing to the establishment of a smart and sustainable mobility system that adheres to the highest standards of traffic safety and operational efficiency.
The newly approved license plates are divided into two main categories that allow for the immediate identification of the vehicle's nature of work and operational status on the road; the first category bears the "Test" mark and is granted exclusively to autonomous vehicles that are still undergoing field testing and evaluation phases within pilot programs, while the second category bears the "Auto Drive" mark and is dedicated to vehicles officially approved to operate within actual commercial operation services and passenger transport.
This step reflects Abu Dhabi's leadership in building an integrated legislative and regulatory environment that keeps pace with future technology, as the classified plates support the processes of tracking and evaluating field operation data with high precision, enabling the competent authorities to analyze performance, develop data-driven traffic policies, and enhance infrastructure readiness to accommodate future expansion in smart autonomous mobility solutions.
