Understanding Tourette Syndrome and Its Associated Neurological Symptoms

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and causes motor and vocal tics. Symptoms often ease in adulthood; behavioral therapy or medication is used when needed.

Tourette syndrome is medically defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the brain and nervous system. It is characterized by repeated involuntary movements and sounds known as tics. Publications from major medical institutions, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Mayo Clinic, indicate that the condition usually begins in early childhood, specifically between the ages of five and seven. It lasts for long periods, exceeding one year, and involves two main types of symptoms: motor tics and vocal tics. These movements and sounds range from simple ones, such as constant eye blinking or throat clearing, to complex ones involving multiple movement patterns or the repetition of words and phrases. They are often preceded by an internal bodily sensation or itch known as a premonitory urge, whose temporary tension disappears as soon as the tic is released. Although the exact cause of the condition is still not definitively known, scientific research suggests the involvement of genetic and hereditary factors passed down through families, as well as possible imbalances in brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which regulate movement and behavior. It is worth noting that the stereotype linking the condition exclusively to uttering obscene or offensive words is inaccurate, as this phenomenon, known as coprolalia, affects only a relatively small proportion of patients. Symptoms usually peak in early adolescence, then gradually improve and decrease in severity as most affected people reach adulthood. In many mild cases, symptoms do not require treatment if they do not affect the quality of daily life. When needed, treatment plans are used that include behavioral therapy, such as Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), to help patients recognize the urge and manage it, or the prescription of certain medications to control severe symptoms and improve occupational and social functioning.
