Major Paris Protests Against the Cost of Living

The French capital Paris and other cities witnessed massive demonstrations with thousands participating to demand urgent measures to address the cost of living crisis and soaring inflation, amid mounting economic pressures weighing heavily on the European public.

The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) union estimated the number of participants at about eight hundred thousand nationwide with hundreds of thousands present in Paris, while the Interior Ministry estimated the total number at more than four hundred thousand demonstrators.

These protests were marked by security tensions and limited clashes between some demonstrators and security forces, who used tear gas to prevent protesters from breaching security barriers and approaching sensitive areas.

These widespread popular and union movements aim to pressure the French government to contain the rapid wave of price hikes and provide support packages and practical solutions to alleviate the accumulated living burdens on citizens.
