A New Perspective on the Turkish Ocalan Case

Abdullah Ocalan is considered the founder and first leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which was established in 1978. His political and militant trajectory has gone through prominent milestones beginning with his involvement in student and leftist activism in Ankara and Istanbul, passing through his transition to manage his party's organization from outside Turkey following the 1980 coup, and culminating in his arrest in Kenya in 1999 and his extradition to Turkish authorities to serve his sentence imprisoned on Imrali Island.

In the context of this long trajectory and its transformations linked to efforts to explore settlement formulas, the decision to allocate a new residence for Ocalan within the Imrali Island complex has sparked a wide wave of political controversy in Turkey.
