Global financial markets experienced during today's trading, Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a cautious divergence and a direct reaction to inflation data and the monetary policy path of major central banks, amid widespread anticipation ahead of imminent U.S. Federal Reserve decisions and ongoing geopolitical pressures in major producing regions. Gold prices registered a decline during today's session, affected by a notable rebound in the U.S. dollar index and rising government bond yields; spot gold fell between 0.35 percent and 0.5 percent to settle near levels of 4,121 and 4,124 dollars per ounce, while U.S. futures for December delivery registered a pullback near the 4,163 dollars per ounce level. Analysts attribute this behavior to investors awaiting U.S. inflation data and the upcoming interest rate decision, as forecasts point to the possibility of keeping rates unchanged, although options for monetary tightening to curb inflationary pressures remain open. In the same context, other metals experienced mixed volatility; silver rose between 0.6 percent and 0.9 percent registering levels near 57.32 and 57.42 dollars per ounce, platinum rose above 1,648 dollars, while copper and industrial metal prices trended slightly downward.

Regarding energy markets, global oil prices maintained their gains and relative stability in Asian and European trading, driven by tense geopolitical conditions in the Middle East and supply concerns; Brent crude traded near 111.13 dollars per barrel recording gains of around 1.45 percent, while West Texas Intermediate crude moved around the barrier of 100.57 to 103.66 dollars per barrel. Markets continue to harbor fears regarding the security of shipping routes and global energy supplies in light of ongoing disruptions, which undermines de-escalation efforts and keeps fuel prices at elevated levels that, in turn, pressure global inflation rates.

As for the movement of major currencies and the dollar index (DXY), the index regained some of its strength achieving stability near the 101.75 to 101.87 points level, supported by market expectations regarding the trajectory of U.S. interest rates and slight pressures suffered by European currencies. Exchange rates of major currencies recorded approximate levels: the euro against the dollar at 1.1231 dollars, the British pound at 1.3356 dollars, while the U.S. dollar traded against the Japanese yen at a level of 158.14 yen, amid stock and currency markets anticipating any new signals issued by major central banks as the end of the current month approaches.
