Inauguration of the solid-state battery production line

The company Saft, specialized in advanced energy solutions, inaugurated on October 20, 2026 its first large-scale industrial production line dedicated to the manufacturing of all-solid-state battery cells at its technological complex in the city of Bordeaux, France.

The project was based on a documentary report and technical certification issued by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Technology, announcing the end of the laboratory prototype phase and the official transition to series manufacturing of batteries completely free of flammable liquid solvents.

The manufactured battery is based on an advanced sulfur-based ceramic electrolyte that stands out for superior ionic conductivity comparable to that of conventional liquids, also integrating a composite anode of pure metallic lithium protected by a nanostructured interfacial layer that completely prevents the formation of dendrites causing short circuits.

Recorded technical data show a volumetric energy density of up to 450 watt-hours per kilogram, representing an increase of approximately 40 percent compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, in addition to its capacity to recover 70 percent of its energy in 12 minutes of fast charging, operating with total stability within a thermal range from 20 degrees below zero to 80 degrees above zero.

Initial operational capacity will cover the needs of the vertical takeoff electric aviation sectors, unmanned spacecraft, and sensitive defense equipment, as a prelude to expanding supply to the heavy transport sector by the year 2027.
