In a political and legal development that reshuffles the deck and stirs controversy in the United States, an old and deleted tweet by Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has brought renewed attention to past accusations concerning her previous marriage and identity records, alongside ongoing federal investigations.
The story dates back to when the New York Post tracked down a post written by Ilhan Omar in June 2013 on social media, in which she congratulated her late father, recording his name as "Nur Said," before the post was deleted in September 2019, according to digital archive records.
This name matched the name of her ex-husband, "Ahmed Nur Said Elmi," whom she married in 2009, amid previous accusations promoted by opposition circles claiming that the marriage was fraudulent for the purpose of helping her alleged brother obtain US residency—allegations that the congresswoman has repeatedly and categorically denied without official evidence proving the sibling relationship.
This controversy recently escalated following a raid by federal agents on Ilhan Omar's home in Washington, D.C., on October 12 of this year, as part of a criminal investigation probing potential inaccurate information provided in her immigration and naturalization documents.
This was followed by the US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia submitting a court filing referring to the congresswoman as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi," also known as "Ilhan Abdullahi Omar," which some interpreted as her legal name, while her office rushed to reject this characterization, emphasizing that her true legal name is Ilhan Abdullahi Omar and that the inclusion of that formula does not prove the use of a fake identity.
For his part, a spokesperson for the congresswoman described these accusations as a hateful and baseless conspiracy theory, explaining that the deletion of the old tweet years ago was due to Ilhan and her family facing a campaign of security threats, which the congresswoman herself confirmed in media statements on the "MS NOW" network, where she described those claims as insane and dismissed any truth to them.
It is worth noting that Ilhan Omar arrived on US soil as a refugee from Somalia in 1995, separated from her former husband Elmi in 2017 before marrying Ahmed Hirsi in 2018, leaving these speculations, name matches, and record alignments hanging pending the final results of the current federal investigations.
